Hello Everyone!
The plan is to make a video of a rousing BVB tune, that looks like we’re all playing together at the same time, albeit from separate locations. Banbury Bill is the chosen tune.
This happens in 4 stages:
1. Everyone submits an audio recording of themselves playing the Banbury Bill arrangement.
2. Laurel mixes all the recordings together into one ‘track’.
3. Everyone records a (jolly) video of themselves playing the ‘final mix’.
4. Laurel compiles all the videos into one!
If you’re happy to be involved, please record yourself (instructions, help and top tips below). If you prefer, you’re welcome to record but not be in the video and vice versa!
1. To ensure we’re all in time, you need to play along with the ‘guide audio’.
2. The guide audio can be downloaded or played online here:
3. Play the guide audio through headphones, so that you can hear the guide, but on the recording you make we hear only you.
4. A reminder of the arrangement!
Top Tips!
*Practise through a few times with the guide track in headphones before trying to record it. (Ideally on days preceding the day you record.)
*Please don’t play in your silences! Practise trying to finish and start phrases cleanly before and after rests.
*Do a few recording tests to check that the sound is working ok. Press record and play a scale or 5-10 notes. Play the test recording back; if it’s too quiet, then move nearer the microphone (or computer or phone). If it’s distorted then move away from the mic.
*Try to relax! It takes a lot of concentration to record. I usually try 3-4 attempts at most and if I can’t get it have a breather and try again later or another day.
*It’s ok! Recording almost always sounds worse than a) you think you sound and b) it sounds live. Your part may sound exposed on it’s own, but it’ll sound brilliant once everyone’s in! Once you’ve had a few goes, send it to me even if you think it’s terrible! It’ll sound great in the mix and we need everyone to make it sound like Brigstowe.
More detailed instructions about recording for those who need them below.
Deadline: 26th August 2020.
Thanks! Looking forward to it!
Laurel
Recording Help!
The simplest set up is to play the audio on one device and record into another. I’d recommend recording on whichever is newest as it’s likely to have the best microphone.
For example you could download the recording to an mp3 player or computer, listen on headphones and record into the ‘dictaphone’ on your phone.
Here’s the instructions on a Mac, there are similar programmes on PCs.
Macs usually come with free software, ‘garageband’:
Open garageband.
Click ‘new project’
Select ‘acoustic instrument’
Save as ‘BVB_your name’
Drag ‘guide audio’ you downloaded onto the central panel
Put your headphones on, get your instrument in place and press the space bar to play the track.
You can adjust the volume on the left-hand end of the track, or overall on your computer. Make sure you can hear the track through the headphones AND yourself in the room in equal balance.
If you can hear then metronome, then click Control (top menu) / and make sure ‘Metronome’ is not ticked. (You’re using the guide track instead of the metronome).
Click Track (top menu) / New Track
Select ‘Real Instrument’ and click create
Tap the cursor on the new track so it is highlighted blue. This is where you’ll record.
Move the red ‘play’ line back to the beginning using the control at the bottom of the screen, next to ‘record’. (The symbol is a line meeting a backwards arrow.)
Press record (red button at bottom). The track you are recording in will progressively turn red.
If you don’t have enough time before the track starts, you drag the whole guide track to the right.
If you accidentally record over the guide track, simply press ‘Control Z’ (undo)
You”ll be able to see the waveform of the notes. If it is very small, move closer to the computer. if it is very tall, move further away.
There is also a noise meter on the track – if it hits red then move further away from the mic!
You can create more tracks if you want a second (and third!) try.
Create a new track as before.
Mute your other recordings by clicking the mute button on their track (looks like a speaker) .
When you are happy with your recording, here’s how to export it:
Mute all the other tracks including the guide track. (Press space to play and check you can only hear that one).
Click ‘Share’ (top menu) / ‘Export Song to Disc’.
Choose ‘MP3’ encoder. Click Export
Save as ‘BVB_your name’ and choose where the file will go. Click save.
Please label the audio file with your name and BVB. If you get a choice of what format to send the recording in .mp3, .wav or .aiff are all fine.
Send the file to me via wetransfer (www.wetransfer.com) by 26th August.
My email is swiftlj AT gmail DOT com
Any problems please ask! Recording can be quite tricky the first few times you try it, but it’s really fun once you get going and problems usually have simple solutions.
