West Somerset Folk Festival (Carhampton) Saturday 30 June – Sunday 1 July 2018

Message from Fitjof about the West Somerset Folk Festival:

‘Just a quick note to provide some more information on the West Somerset Folk Festival gig on 30th June. Such as last year, band members , their partners and children/ grandchildren will be given free entry and camping for the whole of the festival. If you wish you can camp from Friday afternoon until Monday morning on a lovely flat site (cricket pitch) with toilet facilities and showers and enjoy the whole of this cosy festival for free. Cakes, beer and cider are for sale and for a small fee you can book an excellent cooked breakfast on Sunday. If you just want to come for the Saturday afternoon, you might consider making travel arrangements with other like-minded band members.
More at the next rehearsal, but here is a link to the website:’

Rookery Farm gig – Sunday 10 June 2018

Information from Heather about the Rookery Farm gig on Sunday 10 June – it sounds lovely.

‘The invitation to play at Rookery Farm, Puxton, Nr Weston-S-M on Sunday June 10th has come via me (Heather) so I thought you would want to know a bit more about it. Paddy Dadd who lives there with her willow-weaving, story-telling daughter opens up the garden once a year in aid of a cancer charity. It has a magical atmosphere – somewhat alternative, fey, slightly unkempt, with lake, wildlife, walled herb garden, orchard, willow weaving studio, composting loo… etc. Tea and cakes are served on the terrace beside the lake, and musicians play in some of the different areas of the garden. I’ve played there for about 5 or 6 years. Except that this year, the person who was organising musicians has had to go into hospital and it seems there is a big gap!! So Paddy asked if I had any ideas and I thought of BVB. I think it would be a perfect fit. We could play on the island on the lake and the sound would echo around beautifully. It would be background music so we would not need to do anything other than play through tunes in the arrangements we have worked out – probably 2 x 30 – 40 minute slots. It takes about 45 mins from Bristol to get there. If you like poking around a delightful garden in the middle of the country on a summer afternoon, with the opportunity to play music and be really appreciated for it, this is the gig for you! Please sign up to Steve’s doodle poll so that I can let Paddy know asap if we can get a band together for it.

I should have said – there is a barn open on one side (roof, long side, 2 short sides) available to play if wet. If a total washout (ie such awful rain that no one would visit the garden anyway), we don’t go.’

Date for the Diary – Saturday 7th July 2018 – Grittleton Cricket Club

Following our Harvest Festival concert in West Kington, Brigstowe Village Band have been invited by Grittleton Cricket Club (SN14 6AW) to provide entertainment at an Edwardian Cricket match to celebrate the club’s 150th anniversary.

The format of the afternoon is likely to be a short game of cricket under 1868 rules and another under 2018 rules separated by an interval.

They will also try to recreate this team photo taken in 1868:

1868_processed_compactFood and drink will be provided – Grittleton Cricket Club prides itself on it’s teas. There will also be a BBQ and a bar.

The club will have the use of the adjacent village hall so we can play indoors or out depending on the weather.

It should be a lovely afternoon – put the date in your diaries.
